The perfect day in the Cotswolds

The perfect day in the Cotswolds

Ella Williams journeys from Georgian Bath into the storybook charm of the Cotswolds, on a relaxing small-group day tour with Mad Max Tours.

Before our trip, a friend who knows the UK well gave us one crucial piece of advice: "Don't even think about driving in the Cotswolds. The roads are tiny and parking is a nightmare. Find a good tour." It turned out to be the best tip we received.

Choosing this small-group tour was the key to a perfect day. From the moment we left Bath, it felt less like a tour and more like a family road trip. The minibus was comfortable, and with just a handful of other people, it was easy to chat and get to know everyone.

Our guide, David, was the secret ingredient that made the day so special. He was a genuinely fantastic driver, navigating those winding lanes like he was born to it, but he was also a brilliant storyteller. He didn't just give us facts and dates; he shared funny anecdotes and pointed out little details you'd miss a hundred times on your own.

And the villages themselves? Oh, they live up to the hype, and then some. Walking into Castle Combe for the first time is a moment I won’t forget—it’s so peaceful and impossibly beautiful.

What I really loved was the pacing. This wasn't a 'look out the window and snap a photo' kind of tour. We had a generous amount of free time in each location to properly explore. We wandered through the shops in Stow-on-the-Wold, found a lovely spot for lunch, and got to see all the highlights like Bibury’s famous Arlington Row and the river in Bourton-on-the-Water without ever feeling rushed.

Honestly, the whole day just worked… it felt like we’d discovered a travel cheat code. We saw so much more than we ever could have on our own. A 10/10 experience we'd recommend to anyone.
