Itinerary

By starting this Cornwall tour from Bath, you are perfectly positioned to dive straight into the history and beauty of the South West without the long motorway slog from London.

At Mad Max Tours, we believe the best way to travel is with friends you haven't met yet. Our small-group minibuses are designed to go where the big buses can’t—down the narrow Cornish lanes and into the heart of the tiniest fishing villages. Led by our friendly, knowledgeable driver-guides, this 5-day adventure blends the legends of King Arthur, the scenery of Poldark, and the option to visit the honey-coloured charm of the Cotswolds.

Monday

Meeting Point: Outside the Abbey Hotel, Terrace Walk, Bath BA1 1LF. Check-in: 08:50 am | Depart: 09:00 am

Your adventure begins with a dedicated shuttle from Bath, whisking you straight to the ancient Salisbury Plain. Here, you’ll meet up with your main touring coach and driver-guide at our first stop: Stonehenge. This is the world’s most famous stone circle, thought to be 4,500 years old, yet we still don’t understand its true meaning. Many theories exist, suggesting the stones could have been a solar calendar, burial site or perhaps a place of worship. We’ll attempt to unravel the mysteries of the stones.

Next, we head to medieval Salisbury. The cathedral here is a true showstopper (with the tallest spire in Britain!), and you’ll have time to hunt down the original Magna Carta or simply grab a bite in a historic pub. By afternoon, we hit the coast. We’ll take you to Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast—a fossil hunter's paradise and the setting for Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Walk the famous "Cobb" harbour wall before we head to Exeter for a well-earned rest.

Overnight: Exeter

Tuesday

First up is the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park. Famous for its ponies, granite tors, and the spooky tales of The Hound of the Baskervilles, it’s a landscape that feels untamed.

We’ll descend into Plymouth for lunch, where you can stand on the very steps the Pilgrim Fathers left from in 1620. Then, it’s the moment we’ve been waiting for: crossing the river into Cornwall. We’ll navigate the winding lanes to Polperro, a village so pretty it feels like a movie set, before visiting Charlestown—a historic harbour you’ll instantly recognize from the TV series Poldark. We end the day in the vibrant maritime town of Falmouth, our home for the next two nights.

Overnight: Falmouth

Wednesday

Today is all about the dramatic coastlines that make a Cornwall tour from Bath so special. We start with the breathtaking view of St Michael’s Mount, a castle-topped island that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale.

From there, we explore the incredible Minack Theatre, an open-air theatre carved by hand into the granite cliffs—a true labour of love with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. We’ll then take you as far west as you can go on the mainland: Land’s End. Keep your eyes peeled for the Isles of Scilly! We wrap up the touring day in St Ives, the dazzling seaside town famous for its artists and golden beaches, before heading back to Falmouth for a free evening.

Overnight: Falmouth

Thursday

We say goodbye to Falmouth and head north to Port Isaac. If you’re a fan of Doc Martin, you’ll know this as "Portwenn." It’s a classic Cornish fishing village with steep streets and plenty of character. You’ll have time to explore the filming locations and grab some fresh seafood.

Next, we delve into legend at Tintagel, the mythical birthplace of King Arthur. The ruins here are perched precariously on the cliffs, offering spectacular views and a real sense of history. After soaking up the myths, we travel back to Exeter for our final night together.

Overnight: Exeter

Friday

For our final day, we return to where it all began: beautiful Bath. Since we started here, you might think you’ve seen it, but there is always more to discover in this double UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander the Royal Crescent, visit the Jane Austen Centre, or treat yourself to a famous Bath Bun.

Heading Home Sadly, all good things come to an end.

Staying in the West? You can hop off back in Bath.

  • Want to continue to London? Stay on board, and we’ll take you to London Heathrow (Bath Rd, near Terminals 2-3) or the Holiday Inn Kensington, London. We’ll finish the tour with a drive through the Cotswolds. This region is world-famous for its rolling green hills and storybook villages. We’ll stop at Castle Combe, often voted the prettiest village in England, for a final stroll and photo op.

We aim to finish by approximately 6:00 pm.

Just let your guide know your finishing point preference when you arrive on the tour.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring luggage?

Each person may bring one suitcase and one carry-on item, such as a backpack. We ask that your suitcase does not exceed 15kg in weight, due to our minibus weight restrictions. If your luggage is too heavy, then we may not be able to accept it. Excess luggage can be stored at the Abbey Hotel, Bath.

Tell me about the food—is it included?

Breakfast is included every morning at your accommodation, featuring everything from full English fry-ups to fresh local fruit and yogurts. For lunch and dinner, we give you the freedom to choose. However, we make sure to stop in towns famous for their culinary scene. You’ll have ample opportunity to sample the region’s best: Fresh Seafood: We spend nights in coastal towns like St Ives and Falmouth, where the "catch of the day" was likely swimming in the harbor that morning. The Classics: No trip is complete without a proper Cornish Pasty (meat and veg wrapped in golden pastry) or a Cream Tea. Note: We will teach you the correct jam-to-cream etiquette depending on whether we are in Devon or Cornwall!

Where does the tour start and end?

We depart from our usual meeting point at the Abbey Hotel in Bath. Return: On the final day, we offer a "dual-drop" service. The minibus will return to Bath around lunch time for those completing their loop, but we then continue directly to London (Heathrow and Central London) for guests who need to catch a flight or continue their travels. The tour concludes at Holiday Inn, Kensington at around 6pm. You simply let your driver know your preferred drop-off location when you arrive on the tour.

How active is this tour?

We suggest that to make the most of our tours you need to be comfortable walking so that you can explore all of the locations included in the tour. However, the tours are to be enjoyed at the pace of each individual. For those who enjoy walking and hiking there will be ample opportunities to explore, whilst those who wish to enjoy a more relaxed trip can do so. Our tours are not strenuous, but are designed to make the most of each day and give you sufficient time to explore all of our destinations.
